Brass Bales Catch

First of all, A Brass Bales catch is sometimes referred to as a ball catch. Furthermore, they have a spring-loaded ball held within a cylinder attached to a flange. Also, the catch is recessed into the edge of the door while the striker plate is recessed into the jamb.

What is a Bales Ball Catch?

First of all, a ball catch door is a door with a ball catch mechanism mounted on the top or side. Moreover, this is hidden from view. Additionally, the ball catch mechanism consists of a spring-loaded ball that catches and holds the door closed. Finally, Ball catch doors are generally used indoors.

How to install a Bales Catch!

The first thing to know about Bales catches is they sit inside the top of the door. Furthermore, they keep the door shut by a friction fit between the catch and the door jamb. However, the catches are used on interior doors. Accordingly, this is because they don’t provide any real security. Also, they are typically used on double doors where both doors are frequently used.

  1. First, locate the spot where the ball catch will be installed on the top of the door. Then measure in two inches from the edge of the door and make a mark. This mark should be centered between the front and back faces of the door.
  2. Second, measure the width and height of the barrel of the ball catch.
  3. Third, drill a hole centered on the location mark. Equally important, the hole should be slightly deeper than the height of the ball catch. Also, be sure to use a drill bit that is as wide as the ball catch, usually 1 inch.
  4. Fourth, drop the ball catch in the hole and fasten the faceplate to the top of the door.
  5. Then shut the door and make a mark on the upper door jamb directly over the center of the ball catch. Also, make a second mark on the underside of the door jamb that marks the center of the door jamb
  6. Drill a shallow hole centered on the mark on the underside of the door jamb. Use a drill bit that is 1/4 inch wider than the bit used to drill the hole for the ball catch.
  7. Finally, install the catch plate on the door jamb. The indention on the plate should fit into the shallow hole. To conclude, fasten the plate.
